Suggestions on How to Debate in Committee + Office Hours
Hello delegates!
We are almost a week away from conference weekend, and we are so pumped to meet you!
BVC Office Hours
First of all, those of you who have submitted a position paper should be able to see your scores and feedback on Huxley by now. Please email me if this is not the case. If you would like feedback on your position paper or have any questions about the topic or general committee, you are welcome to meet with the dais during office hours. Here is the office hours link, where you may sign up for a 15-minute time slot.
Suggestions for Debate
As noted in a previous committee-wide email, your solutions can focus on any aspect of sustainability during crisis, meaning it does not have to focus on how women are impacted (although these solutions are also welcome!).
For the debate, I would suggest come prepared with a speech or “mini-pitch” of your business idea. Once everyone has had a chance to pitch their idea, delegates will interact with one another to create entrepreneurship groups (which is the BVC version of “resolution groups”). For each innovative idea, I would suggest addressing areas like Product-Market Fit, Barriers to Entry, Competitive Advantage, Competitive Landscape, and plans to scale up your venture. If you’re not familiar with these terms yet, that’s totally fine! Be sure to research them a little bit before conference.
The dais is looking for a range of 3-5 entrepreneur groups by the time of final pitches (which is the BVC version of “presenting resolutions”). Each group will present their pitch via a slide deck instead of a document, as done in standard BMUN committees. You will also provide an “asking price,” where delegates request a certain amount of money to launch their venture (i.e. $2 million dollars for marketing, product design, and hiring a team). By the end of Saturday, the dais will provide feedback on your week and provide a proposed amount of money we would give you (this may be more, less, or the same as your asking price). You will have time on Sunday to perfect your pitch, and potentially receive more funding from the dais.
Optional Decking Tools
For many of you, one of the biggest challenges we anticipate is being able to pivot from “resolution writing” to an entrepreneurial pitch. We understand this might be a difficult transition, so I’d like to provide a few resources that you can use for your slides (and for future slide presentations you may make!)
Slidesgo: Various slide templates that you can use, contains themes for every type of presentation
SlidesCarnival: Another platform that provides different slide templates
Flaticon: Little icons and mini-photos that you can incorporate in your slides when relevant
Canva: Platform to create collaborative slides on, with various themes built in!
Beautiful.ai: Another platform to create presentations on
I hope this was helpful to everyone! Please feel free to reach out with any questions at bvcbmunlxx@bmun.org (or my personal email cwherritt@bmun.org), and of course sign up for office hours to meet with us virtually!
Warmly,
Celine Wherritt
