BVC Key Terms to Know

Hi delegates!  To continue welcoming you to BVC and BMUN LXX as a whole we wanted to offer some clarification to various key terms you may find throughout the background guide. Please note that this is just a subset of the terms we determined to be most important. We recommend that you read the topic synopsis for more defined key terms and research terms outside of this as well.  A business model is one of the most fundamental concepts in entrepreneurship. It helps you describe your target market, plans for feasibility, and how you plan on making revenue. …Basically, it helps you to show other people who your product or service is meant to help, how you will make money (some sort of subscription model – think Netflix or Amazon Prime, selling a product for more than it costs to produce, etc.), and how you will stand out from potential competitors.  Speaking of standing out from potential competitors, there is something called having a competitive advantage . BVC Welcome + Position Paper Expectations

Hello Delegates! Welcome to Berkeley Venture Capital (BVC)! I hope y'all are HYPED for BMUN LXX. This year our topic is Innovation Through Crisis: Furthering and Sustaining Environmentalism . Topic Summary: Unlike usual environmental topics, delegates must consider our emergence to a post-pandemic society. Within the past 2 years, the environment has experienced many changes. For instance, the demand for one-use plastics increased by 40% in 2020 at the peak of the pandemic. During the pandemic, many businesses focused on short-term profit to stay afloat, and sustainability was often deprioritized in order to prepare for a global lockdown. The United Nations stressed that COVID-19 has undone decades of progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals, including goals towards sustainable development. COVID-19 and climate change alike do not affect everyone equally; in fact, such global crises highlight structural inequalities for the impoverished, for women, and for people of col...

Vice Chair Introduction: Justin Flesher

Image
Delegates, welcome to BMUN!  My name is Justin Flesher, I am a junior majoring in Data Science at Berkeley. I grew up in Atlanta, Georgia where I was able to gain a working knowledge of and deep respect for Model UN. Later, I had the opportunity to graduate early from high school and participate in a year-long exchange through the State Department to Germany during what would have been my senior year. There I had the wonderful experience of learning German and I gained a deeper understanding of politics, international affairs, and international business. In my free time I love to explore the Bay Area, try out new coffee shops, play soccer, and go hiking!  Overall, I hope to share the same excitement I have for international political and economic issues with you all this year in BMUN. Along with other members of my dais, I am very excited to join delegates in debating and crafting resolutions this year.  Good luck at conference this year, and don't hesitate to reac...

Vice Chair Introduction: Harrison Winikoff

Image
Hey everyone!  My name is Harrison Winikoff and I am one of your vice chairs for BVC. I am a current sophomore studying Business Administration with a concentration in Global Management (which is a long way of saying that I study international business) and a minor in Global Poverty. Feel free to enjoy the irony in studying business and poverty together, but hey, I believe there is a way to make money ethically while helping people in the process.  In addition to BMUN, I’m involved in another club called The Berkeley Forum, which hosts interesting speakers on campus.  I love hiking, cooking, travel, and movies, so if you have any good movie recommendations or food spots, I’d love to hear them. Some of my favorite shows include West Wing, Sherlock, and Masterchef. Regardless, best of luck for conference! I’m looking forward to hearing all of your solutions in March.

Head Chair Introduction: Celine Wherritt

Hello, everyone! My name is Celine Wherritt, and I will be your head chair for this session's Berkeley Venture Capital. I’m a senior at UC Berkeley studying Business Administration with a minor in Global Poverty and Practice, with an interest in corporate social responsibility and consulting. I am super passionate about entrepreneurship and urban tech, so I am eager to hear about the solutions you all propose. In my free time, I am a huge fan of competitive napping and rereading childhood books. After graduation, I will be working in a corporate strategy role in New York City, so feel free to reach out if you're interested in learning more about that! I’m looking forward to chairing this committee of undoubtedly skilled delegates! If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at cwherritt@bmun.org or bvcbmunlxx@bmun.org.
